Mr. Rex Tillerson, United States Secretary of State, has met with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria. They met today in the Presidential Villa where the Nigerian president received the American Secretary of State.
Tillerson is on a five-nation tour of Africa, having visited Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, and Somalia. It is his first visit to the continent since he became Secretary of State in 2017.
At the meeting with Buhari, there were indications the American government would assist Nigeria in tackling the terrorist organization Boko Haram. Sources in the presidency say that both discussed matters relating to economic ties, security and corruption.
On the issue of the recently abducted Dapchi Girls, for instance, Tillerson said that a deal could be worked out to secure the girls’ release, emphasizing on intelligence gathering and sale of equipment to assist the country fight terrorism. He has since ended his tour of Nigeria.
