Mendy now world’s most expensive defender after signing for City

France left-back, Benjamin Mendy became the world most expensive defender after penning a five-year deal with Manchester City Football Club

The 23-year-old joined City from Ligue 1 champions, Monaco.

Mendy, who signed for Monaco last year June for a reported fee of eleven million pounds has grown to become the world most expensive defender. In the space of a year, he has also increase his appearance tally in the France national team to four.

Monaco being rejuvenated some years past beat Paris-St Germain to the French title last season and also reached the Champions League semi-finals last season.
Their players have subsequently been in demand and Mendy’s departure is the Ligue 1 side’s third major departure so far this summer.

Silva and Mendy have both joined City, while Chelsea has signed midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from them.

They could yet lose more players, with striker Kylian Mbappe, winger Thomas Lemar and defender Fabinho being linked with moves.

Mendy is City’s fifth major signing of the summer and takes their spending to more than £200m.

“He is undoubtedly one of the world’s best full-backs, our number one target in this position,” said Man city’s director of football Txiki Begiristain.

Mendy played 34 times for Monaco last season and helped them to their first Ligue 1 title in 17 years after joining them from Marseille last summer.

He is the Premier League club’s fifth major signing of the summer following the recruitment of England right-back walker for £45m, plus a potential £5m of add-ons, Portugal midfielder Silva (£43m), Brazilian keeper Ederson (£35m) and defender Danilo from Real Madrid (£26.5m).
