Insecurity: Buhari may fire Service Chiefs today

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently presiding over a security council meeting at the presidential villa. The meeting is a fall out of the resurgence of the deadly Boko Haram terrorist group and other regional agitations particularly related the activities of self determination groups such as IPOB, MASSOB as well as the recent quit notice on the Igbos by the Arewa Youth group.

Sources within the Presidency told our correspondent that the President may relieve the Service Chiefs of their appointment as some of them are already due for retirement.

There are speculations that the President may want to rejig the military commands to curb activities of militants groups in the country and the Boko Hram group.

The security council is the executive organ responsible for national security decisions.

The national security adviser,  service chiefs, and the inspector-general of police are at the meeting.

The president returned to the country from the UK, where he went for medical treatment, on Saturday.

On Monday, he addressed the country vowing to tackle “terrorists and criminals” as well as “irresponsible elements” who are spreading hate.

“Nigeria’s unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble and when things get bad they run away and saddle others with the responsibility of bringing back order, if necessary with their blood,” he had said.

“I am charging the security agencies not to let the successes achieved in the last 18 months be a sign to relax terrorists and criminals must be fought and destroyed relentlessly so that the majority of us can live in peace and safety.”

It is apparent that the President has expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the Service Chiefs.
