The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU) on Saturday donated relief materials to victims of January 5 gunmen attacks in Katibu, Lau Local Government Area of Taraba.
Items donated to the IDPs ,who are camping at Central Primary School, Jalingo and Government Secondary School, Negatavah, were bags of grains, seasoning, clothes, cooking oil, among others.
Presenting the materials to the IDPs at Central Primary School, Jalingo, the ASUU Chairman, Taraba State University Chapter, Dr. Ruben Jonathan, said the gesture was to cushion the effect of the victims’ hardship.
Jonathan said the Congress of the union had unanimously approved the donation, when it learnt that there were massive loss of lives and property in the crises.
He urged the victims to consider the union’s love and sympathy in this difficult time as more important than the relief materials which may not be sufficient.
The chairman however advised the victims to ensure that they played their part in having a sustainable peace in the area, now that they had seen the adverse effects of crises.
Responding, the spokesman of the IDPs, Mallam Bakari Katibu, thanked ASSU for its assistance, saying that it was the first organization to come to their aid.
He expressed concern that they had not received any support from the state government throughout their stay on camp.
He said over 3000 displaced persons reported to the camp on Jan 5, though some IDPs later moved to stay with relatives.
Katibu identified poor sanitary conditions, lack of health services, shortage of water and mattresses as some of their challenges.
Our correspondent reports that Jonathan and his team also made similar donations to other IDPs at Government Secondary School, Negatavah.
